The sound produced by a good piano, well played, is perhaps the best music there is. However, very few people can play the piano well enough to get through a piece by Mozart, Chopin, or even your basic Christmas carols. I know I can't. So when I heard my first player piano, I knew this was for me. Superb music, with lyrics, played by the best pianists in the world, performed in your own living room. Glorious and fun! The new electronic players are nice but you can't sing along as no words are provided. They also lack the human element - no person is interacting with the piano. When a person is sitting down at the piano pumping the pedals, other people are drawn to the piano. When it just sits there playing by itself, it becomes a piece of furniture or stereo, and loses most of its appeal. I see them in the lobbies of hotels, playing away, and ignored. Foot pumping upright players are so much more fun. However, the average player piano is 80 years old. All felts, hoses, leather, gaskets, tubing - everything is dried out, cracked, broken and rusty. Also the piano itself needs refinishing, restringing, key tops and so on. All of this translates into hundreds hours of labor and a significant expense. I specialize in old upright player pianos.
